 I would think this more common for flickers.  Have seen many flickers
torment homeowners, but never a red-belly.

I was waiting for someone else to speak up. I agree with Steve. Flickers are
much more common for metal drumming, be it a gutter or, in our case, a
guard-rail.
    But I also agree with George that the bird should not be asked to alter
his ways. Let him have the gutter. It's an intricate part of his territory.
Or so he thinks.
