Got out this evening before the wind and rain kicked up to Wyman Park 3
blocks from my house in [more or less] central Baltimore. With the storms
of the past 18 months or so, and w/ the construction of a huge Johns Hopkins
Univ building going on, this park has really become degraded with erosion,
invasive species, and daytime construction noise. For example, the
Yellow-crowned Night Herons did not return this spring, and the
Red-shouldered Hawks did not return to their nest. Nevertheless, I always
hope to see some migrants this time of year. This evening:
Chimney Swifts
Blue-headed Vireo, 1
Red-eyed Vireo, 1
Ruby-crowned Kinglet, 3
Wood Thrush, 1
Gray Catbird, 2
Brown Thrasher, 2
Yellow Warbler, 1
Myrtle Warbler, many
Black-throated Green Warbler, 1
Palm Warbler, 1 (Western)
Black and White Warbler, 2
Additionally, for anyone who is interested, the May 3rd (arrived in my
mailbox today) New Yorker cover is a good one, and there is also a terrific
color cartoon on the very last page of the same issue.
