Paul,
Red-headed Woodpeckers are common in my neighborhood (western Loudoun
County, VA) & it is not uncommon to see a sub-adult bird this time of year.
In fact, two days ago one visited my feeders. My records show a couple
around this time of year (& later) almost every year. A couple of years
back one was very vocal well into the summer.
