Friday night I left Oxford with the plan of hitting Caroline, Wicomico,
Worcester, and Somerset Counties listening for Chuck-wills-widow and
Whip-poor-wills. Caroline Co. had 21 Whip-poor-wills from Federalsburg to
north of Smithville Lake/Line Rd. I heard no Chuck's from Tanyard down to
Choptank.
South of Sharptown in Wicomico Co. I had 2 Whip's calling. On old Rt. 50
marsh accsess I had one Chuck calling. I then drove to Truitt's Landing in
Worcester Co. There were so many Chuck's calling it was hard to count how
many. It was a cacophany of Chuck's like I had never heard. Probably
close to 25-30 birds. On Ward Rd. in Wor. Co. I had a single Whip. It was
2:45 am when I turned off of Rt. 13 towards Deal Island. About 5 miles west
of Rt. 13 I had a single Chuck call. I decided to go down toward the
Pocomoke to get Whip's but when I got down there everything had gone quiet.
It wasn't until around 5:00 am that I finally heard a single Whip calling on
Peach Orchard Rd. It was a great night for Goatsuckers. Also had a Falcate
Orange-tip and Henry's Elfin's around Old Furnace Town later on toward noon.
