After a call from Barabara Gearhart about the Black Terns I returned to the Mason Dixon Farm near Emmitsburg this afternoon. Joel Martin was there when I arrived and Rob Hilton came in later. The water level in the pond was high and the mud bars in the middle were covered. Most of the birds were in the NE corner of the pond. My rough count for 5/22/04:

Wood Duck - 1
Mallard - 2
Semipalmated Plover - 3
Killdeer - 1
Greater Yellowlegs - 2
Lesser Yellowlegs - 1
Spotted Sandpiper - 2
Semipalmated Sandpiper - 6
Least Sandpiper - 32
Dunlin - 1
Short-billed Dowitcher - 3
Red-necked Phalarope - 1 female
Black Tern - 2 in breeding plumage

Several times most of the birds got up and flew around but always returned. The phalarope fed on the mud part of the time, swam part of the time, and sat down on the mud part of the time.
By the way, it was Barbara Gearhart and Paul Mauss from the Frederick Bird Club who originally found the phalarope on the 19th.
