I apologize for the lateness of this report but our electricity has been out most of the afternoon.
I arrived at Sean's house about 9:10 this morning. Barbara Gearhart had just arrived ahead of me. Dirk Robinson came in a little later. The sky was overcast but started to clear about 9:30. Shortly afterward Barbara and I watched a kettle of 8 birds get up from the west and drift off, scattering to the NE. They all appeared to be immature birds and we had difficulty identifying them. We heard one Broad-wing-like call and thought that was what they might be, but Barbara was also pretty sure that one was a kite. It was very confusing. I wonder if this was the kettle of kites seen later. About ten minutes later we saw a high kettle of four birds but were not sure if these were the same or new birds.
At about 11AM Dirk spotted a bird to the NW. I got on it briefly before it disappeared below the tree line. We were pretty sure it was the Swallow-tailed Kite but it was distant and not a satisfying look.
At about 1PM Barbara spotted both kites in the gap in the trees to the west, just to the right of the end of the street. The Swallow-tail came in directly above Sean's house and circled with two Red-shouldered Hawks. I took some video. The Mississippi Kite followed a couple minutes later and dove on a passing Turkey Vulture. This kite appeared to be an immature.
Barbara and I left at that time but Dirk stayed on and you read Sean's note. It sounds like any time of day may be good except early morning. |
