On Saturday Jim Brighton, John Hubble, Jeb Beagles and myself drove the ORV
zone on Assateague together and we were later joined by Jim Stasz, Mike
Burchert, and Dave Powell. Not to steal any thunder, but we had a great
day. Before we were joined by the second car, we pulled over by the Bull
Pen for a breif sea watch. In the course of about half an hour we had 3
Sooty Shearwater, 1 Greater Shearwater, 2 Cory's Shearwater, and several
more shearwater sp. When the other guys joined us we had 1 shearwater sp.,
then we did a long sea watch at the end of the ORV zone. Birds included 2
Cory's Shearwater that provided great looks, 1 Piping Plover, 32 Red Knot,
about a dozen or so Wilson's Storm-Petrel, 1 Arctic Tern, 4 terns in a group
that Mike and I had a good look at by scope that very much appeared to be
Arctic Tern as well. Gotta hand it to Jim Stasz for suggesting the ORV zone
as an alternative for the cancelled Pelagic trip. Including the 17? Red
Knot that John had at Skimmer Island and 6 other ones, I think the total was
55. One Knot had an Orange flag on its leg. Ah, almost forgot about the
Iceland Gull about half way down the ORV zone. Good Stuff.
