Brain Rollefinke led a pleasant Baltimore Bird Club field trip Sunday June 6
to the historic urban Jones Falls valley south of Coldspring. The misty cool
weather kept the cicadas at bay.

The most notable bird was a Summer Tanager about 1/2 mile north of TV Hill,
first heard singing to the north, and then seen. We note that this is one
day within the atlas safe dates, so people birding in that general area,
which is very close to Cylburn, should keep their eyes and ears open for
signs of breeding. It's the first Summer Tanager I ever saw within the city.
By an amazing coincidence, I just received confirmation that the Summer
Tanager reported at the Zoo for the May Count was NOT a slip of the pen. (I
had almost forgotten about that pending issue.) The Zoo is fairly close to
the area we were in yesterday, so maybe it's the same bird.

Some of the other notable species were about 10 orioles, mainly Baltimore,
lots of Yellow Warblers, several Warbling Vireos, Black-crowned Night-Heron
(with Yellow-crowned strangely absent), Wood Duck, singing Veery and Wood
Thrush.

I suspect Kevin Graff may post a list but I want to put out an alert about
the Summer Tanager. (This is Brian's atlas block.)
