Another kite attempt

I was one of the gang that spent 5 futile hours on Sunday staring at the
sky, searching in vain for the McCandless kites. I was the last hold-out,
waiting it out until about 6:30. Talk about desperation. I was looking in
the wrong direction when two others had a Mississippi zip by at about 5:30.
And to add insult to injury, just before calling it quits I caught a glimpse
of what was probably a Mississippi Kite flying away and quickly out of
sight. Not good enough to count, I'm afraid.

So tomorrow I'm thinking of cutting out of work all of 30 minutes early and
trying again. That means I won't be at Sean's until about 5:30 (with my
fingers crossed that DC traffic won't yet be bad for the start of the Reagan
procession). But it sounds like it's possible to catch the kites if I'm
really lucky, Venus is in transit, the comets are in alignment, and the
winds are 5.4 mph out of the east southeast.

Perhaps I'll see some others while there. That was clearly the best part of
Sunday - catching up with friends I only see on rare occasion (ie, when a
rare bird shows up). And I'd like to echo the words of others who have
lauded Sean for his hospitality (as well as his neighbors).
