Before I go on with this story I should say that I thought
about not telling this but to only those who need to know . But decided to
do so only with out reveling the exact location due to the sesitive nature
of this story and there is no public Acess to the area. Viewing in my case
as well as anyone who would find this location is from the road shoulders
in the back bed of my pickup truck with spotting scope . Best way to see
anyway is to get some height. Genreal location is between Queenstown and
Grasonville. It is in My Queenstown Northeast Breeding Bird Atlas
block that I was working in yesterday Fri July 2 , 2004 . there is
a wetland impounded area here that hosts many waterfowl in the winter . I
decided to check this area and soon seen Wood Duck And Black Duck young
with their adult kin . but soon seen a pair of Common Moorhen. My
first for Queen Annes county, they showed no breeding signs . But will check
back on them . So after that i saw a pair of American Coots With 8
Recently hatched youngsters. When the coots and the Moorhens got to close
to each other the fought and chased each other off . But not to be
outdone there was a pair of Pied - Billed Grebes with 3 half grown young
. I saw both the grebe adult and coot adult fed their own chicks
.According to the last Breeding Bird Atlas and Yellow Book and The
county listings for the new yellow book being worked on There are no
breeding records of Coots or Pied billed Grebes for Queen Annes
County. Guess I fixed that little problem without setting out to .
However I figured someday someone would find breeding Grebes. This
question is ment for Phil Davis , Bob Ringler , Jim Stasz
if you out there. ARE THERE ANY LARGELY UNKNOWN BREEDING RECORDS
OF COOTS OR PIED BILLED GREBES FOR QUEEN ANNES COUNTY ? I did get some
regular photos of the Coots and young. Not Great shots the little ones
look like black dots . I did not get Any grebe photos as they were to far
away. but maybe the coot pictures are ok to document them.
