I know this is OT but I wanted to chime in on the AT too...ahhh the summer
doldrums of birding.

When I was younger I did a lot of mini Hikes (30-50 miles) on the AT. I have
often thought about what fun it would be to bird the trail.  Imagine the
variety of species you would have between Springer Mnt and Ktahdn!  Another
book about the trail not to be missed is one called "5,000,000 Steps".  It
is estimated that t through hiker will take at least five million steps to
complete the journey.  And since we are talking about times, a good friend
of mine through-hiked the entire trail in under five months!   He started on
February 22 and finished on July 16!
