Although I don't bird much in DC anymore (I mostly bird in areas near home,
due to time constraints) I know it has surprising rewards, especially in
the vicinity of its rivers. There is an article in todays Washington Post
that may be of concern to birders with interest in DC's natural habitats
(Anacostia Shore's Evolution Launched, page A-1). It sounds like wildlife
habitat and open space along the the Anacostia River may be in trouble.
The Mayor and DC Council want to "restore and revitalize" the waterfront
from the Washington Channel to the National Arboretum (along both sides).
The article says "Much of the land is now little-used federal parkland,
abandoned industrial areas or undeveloped." There's interesting wildlife
habitat there now (for a city), and a great urban birding opportunity for
city residents, but I doubt this will be of concern to the Council or Mayor
when the time comes for considering impacts to the natural areas and open
space from development of the Anacostia waterfront.
