Sunday & Monday, Long Neck Road hosted a plethora of waders & shorebirds.
Sunday a fly-by juvenile Bald eagle sent up 6 Great Egrets & 24 Snowies from the
little waterway the runs along the field behind the farm with the silo. A bit
further on many Cattle Egrets could be seen in a far field filled with Angus.
Later something sent them up & we calculated there were close to 60 egrets.
Across from & behind the brick house near the end of the road, the fields
were filled with shorebirds. Most numerous were Pectorals, probably 80, maybe
more, the grass made it difficult to count. Killdeer were also abundant. In
amongst these were Greater Yellow-legs, possible Lesser Yellow-legs (I heard both
call) & peeps which were almost impossible to see. The few peeps I saw in the
mud flat behind the barn were Lesser Sandpipers.
Other birds of note:
2 Glossy Ibis
1 Black-bellied Plover
1 Dowitcher (sp), immature with very bright plumage, most like the
Short-billed in Sibley.
1 Bobwhite calling from the edge of the woods.
1 Towhee singing
2 E. Meadowlarks
1 Grasshopper Sparrow with a big bright green bug in its beak.
