From 9:10-10:10 a.m.
Highlight was a beautiful, close-up look at a juvenile Forster's Tern
fishing just beyond the end of the boardwalk, its black eye patch and
buff-colored collar clearly visible. At least one adult was also in the air.
(New for our DC list!)
Four to five great egrets were also present, as well as a Great Blue Heron,
a Green Heron (in flight) and an Osprey.
Tide was up, so no shorebirds in evidence.
Passerines included several Blue-Gray Gnatcatchers, an Indigo Bunting pair
and a flock of 20+ birds that all looked to me like female Orchard Orioles.
Other species seen were the expected: large numbers of Robins, with
fledglings; starlings, some fledgling; a few Canada Geese, large numbers of
Mockingbirds; Catbird; Belted Kingfisher; Mallard; Red-Winged Blackbird;
Common Flicker.
BUTTERFLIES & DRAGONFLIES: Black Swallowtail; Eastern Tiger Swallowtail;
Red-Spotted Purple; Common Whitetail; Blue Corporal (?)
