Last evening, I went to Rock Creek Park to look for nighthawks. My first
stop was the horse corral near the Nature Center in DC. Within a few
minutes, 4 nighthawks showed over the tree line in the direction of the
ridge, with 1 flying right across the moon. While I was waiting for the
nighthawks, a Barred Owl called from the woods between the corral and the
maintenance yard.
I then drove up the road into Montgomery County, stopping at the parking
lot on Beach Drive near Pinehurst Parkway. I had to wait longer here, and
it was getting much closer to dark, but 2 nighthawks eventually appeared,
heading south towards DC.
