We have had birding visitors from Spain this week. They have birded every day of their visit, sometimes accompanied by locals, particularly Mike Bowen, Howard Youth, and Lydia Schindler. Today they ventured by themselves along the canal, and wished to offer this report to MDO. -- Dave Winer

Accidentally we couldn't reach the C & O canal until 8:30, and by then the morning was cloudy and dim. The activity was very slow but at 10:30 sunshine broke out and birds started to show up. At about 200 meters downstream from the Sycamore Island, we detected the presence of a single Warbling Vireo right above our heads, which was kind enough to show us its features. We didn't hear it, but another birder we met by he canal did. Shortly after, a Yellow-billed Cuckoo moved just in from of us at the other side of the canal, feeding pleasantly and taking no notice of our presence. A bit later, and closer to the Sycamore Island, a Yellow-throated Vireo was struggling with a huge caterpillar. Other birds around were: Canada Warbler (1), Eastern Wood-Peewee (1, feeding on butterflies), Eastern Phoebe (1), Red-eyed Vireo (4), Northern Oriole (4-5) and Acadian Flycatcher (1).
