The National Arboretum, NE DC, was moderately productive this morning.
The field/edge area across Beechwood Road from Fern Valley, the Asian
collection, and the Magnolia collection were the most active.

Best bird for today was a lone BANK SWALLOW in the Magnolia collection.
It seems rather late for this species, but I had a very good look and I
don't see what else it could have been. Other songbirds included:
White-eyed,  Yellow-throated, and Red-eyed Vireos; Tennessee and
Black-and-white Warblers; American Redstart; Ovenbird; Scarlet Tanager;
Rose-breasted Grosbeak; and Indigo Bunting.

While I was in the Asian collection, a COMMON LOON passed overhead,
flying south.

The local Red-shouldered Hawks have become much more vocal in the past
week or so after keeping a low profile for most of the summer.

Good birding,

John Beetham
