I went this evening (9/11). Sunset was at 7:22. About ten minutes before
that, they started gathering; they were finished "tornadoing in" by about 20
minutes after sunset. I don't have a lot of experience estimating numbers,
but my guess is about 500. I've seen some large flocks of large birds on
migration, but never chimney swifts at dusk. This was quite a sight,
especially in such an urban location.
