Folks

I went out about 8 AM to the Old Port Tobacco Courthouse (PT) area in Charles County. It was pretty birdy until about 10 AM. I then wandered around the area (Chapel Point State Park, Nitza Farm, Allen's Fresh) until I got hungry.

Port Tobacco - mostly songbirds:

Laughing Gull - 1
Belted Kingfisher - 3
American Kestrel - 1
Mourning Dove
Chimney Swift - 20
Northern Flicker - 1
Red-bellied - 2
Downy Woodpeckers - 1
White-breasted Nuthatch - 2
Eastern Wood Pewee - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 3
White-eyed Vireo - 4
Red-eyed Vireo - 10
Warbling Vireo - 1 (seems late - hoping for a Philadelphia)
Blue Jay - lots
American Crow - less
Carolina Chickadee
Carolina Wren - 2
Eastern Bluebird - 4
American Robin - 10
Gray Catbird - 12
Brown Thrasher - 7
Northern Mockingbird - 4
European Starling - some
American Redstart - female
Common Yellowthroat - 3
Chipping Sparrow - 10
Song Sparrow - 1
White-throated Sparrow - 1 (#126 in the county for September)
Summer Tanager - 1
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - 4
Indigo Bunting - 1

Chapel Point S.P.

Double-crested Cormorant - 5
Eastern Screech Owl - 1
Northern Parula Warbler - 1

Nitza Farm (new for the day):

10 Killdeer at that turf farm - this spot will be checked again on Tuesday
Magnolia Warbler
Scarlet Tanager
American Goldfinch - 40+

Canada Goose (35+) and a few Red-winged Blackbirds were the only species at Allen's Fresh. It was high tide.

Yard birds of late:

Great-horned Owl on Sept. 24.
Red-breasted Nuthatch on Sept. 25 (3rd for the season)
Wood Thrush each day for four days

On Saturday, Sept. 25 I found my first Yellow-rumped "Myrtle" Warbler of the season (#125 for September) at a mitigation pond in Waldorf. There was a Magnolia Warbler also present. This location looks like it could be a good shorebird spot. Hopefully, some tropical depression birds will show up on Tuesday.

Bird on!

George

P.S. A day in Charles County without a Bald Eagle. That's unusual.
