BT Blue Warblers consume a great deal of fruit, especially in the autumn
(well, that's when fruit is most available in this latitude) and also in the
tropics. I also believe they also take nectar in the tropics.
As those of us who bird Rock Creek know, if you have not caught up with BT
Blues at the ridge or the maintenance yard, then hit the Devil's Walking
Stick clumps and you will find them. These tiny sweet berries are a favorite
of this warbler species (and also thrushes and vireos).
A number of years ago I had a drunk BT Blue male in my garden, who had been
feeding on fermented grapes. His attempts to perch upright were amusing.
Eventually he regained control and flew off, albeit a bit wobbly! (Hey,
maybe BT Blues are "angry drunks" -- one explanation for their occasional
aggression.)
