Job Summary 

American Bird Conservancy (ABC) is a U.S. 501(c)3 not-for-profit
organization dedicated to conserving wild birds and their habitats
throughout the Americas. ABC has 29 staff, with offices in The Plains, VA,
and Washington, DC; and staff in Colorado, Indiana, Maryland, Maine,
Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon. ABC has 4,000 members, 24,000
e-mail subscribers, and more than 300 partner organizations throughout the
Americas primarily through its leadership roles in the North American Bird
Conservation Initiative, Partners in Flight, the Bird Conservation Alliance,
the National Pesticide Coalition, the Alliance for Zero Extinction, and
ABC’s international network.

ABC is currently seeking an experienced communications manager to enhance
ABC’s profile and to assist in the production and development of ABC’s
publications and web site. This is a newly created staff position.

Job Duties 

1)         Research and write material for ABC publications and web site.

2)                  Design and oversee timely and successful production of
ABC publications including newsletter, magazine, annual report, and program
publications as needed.

3)                  Write and distribute media releases; track and report on
press coverage for ABC and its programs.

4)                  Maintain and cultivate a broad network of press
contacts. 

5)                  Assist with the content, production, and design of the
ABC web site. 

6)                  Assemble and manage a comprehensive image bank; maintain
relationships with photographers.

7)                  Provide support materials for the Bird Conservation
Alliance. 

8)                  Other duties on occasion as requested by supervisor.
 

Job Qualifications 


The successful candidate for this position will possess the broadest
combination of the characteristics listed below.

1)                  Bachelor’s degree in English or a biological
science-related field with knowledge of conservation, birds, and the
management needs of birds in the Americas.

2)                  Demonstrated ability to manage a multi-faceted work
program; to complete projects on time and within budgets; and to work with a
broad range of staff and contacts.

3)                  The ability to write clearly and well.

4)                  The ability to use desktop publishing (preferably
Pagemaker), web design software, and photo manipulation software such as
Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator.

5)                  Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and
effectively to a wide range of audiences including media contacts.

6)                  Experience in fundraising.
