A dozen birders and the property owner worked the grounds of Hope
House in Talbot County today (10/24) and came up with sightings of 53
species, even though light rain was falling during much of the visit time.
Top highlight, by far, was a lengthy observation of a BICKNELL'S
THRUSH. This bird, loitering in the shelter of a brush pile, allowed
long-time viewing with scopes and binocs, giving all participants great
views. The bird was in shelter from the rain, and the birders were the ones
getting wet. This was a life bird for quite a few of the observers.
Other nice birds of the day:
COMMON LOONS - several
SURF SCOTER - 1
Black Duck - 1
Osprey - 1
Bald Eagle - 1 adult
Six Woodpecker Species (Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy, Flicker, Pileated, and
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker)
BARN SWALLOW - 1
Tree Swallow - 6
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH - several
WINTER WREN - 1
Golden-crowned Kinglet - many
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - many
Cedar Waxwing - one flock of about 20, and
Several Sparrow species (Song, Chipping, Swamp, White-throated and Towhee)
As the leader for this outing, I had visited Hope House on 10/23 (a nice
sunny day), and found the following species that were not found today:
Great Horned Owl
EASTERN WOOD PEWEE - 1
Eastern Phoebe - 2
Brown Creeper - 1
Palm Warbler - 2, and
Field Sparrow - 1
My composite list for the two days at Hope House included 58 species.
