Today's hawk flight was a good example of how raptors use lift from ridges to assist in
migration at Cromwell Valley. A south wind created enough lift on both ridges so that two
distinct flight paths were evident. A clear blue sky made it difficult to pick out many high
fliers, and we can only guess at how many we missed!
With 2,707 raptors counted so far this season (Vultures excluded), the Cromwell Valley Park
Hawkwatch may reach 3,000 hawks by season's end in mid December. When the park
officially re-opens in March or April, we will conduct a Spring Hawkwatch for the first time. We
hope to generate more public interest in the migration of these evocative birds, and anyone
who would like to join in the fun is encouraged to contact me at my E-mail address listed
above.
