Today, actually just a few minutes ago still, there were at least 6 PURPLE
FINCHES (3 brown, 3 red) at the feeder here at Patterson Park in Calvert. I've
been keeping an eye on the feeder since I came back to work here temporarily
on Wednesday and have seen none. Today there is also a much larger contingent
of AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES than had been here on the last two dry days. When I
first checked the feeder this morning, I got quite a start when the first
Goldfinch I saw had a black cap. Hoping is was a Lesser, I looked at it
closely and realized that when it put its head into the feeder port, the rain
that was dripping down matted the feathers against its scalp. When more
Goldfinches came in to the feeder, I noticed that all of them look the same.
Still waiting on a Siskin!
