On Thursday and as seen on a Patuxent MOS field trip on Saturday,
waterfowl numbers at Horsehead Sanctuary were high but diversity low.
Dominating the scene both days was a raft of
2500 Ruddy Ducks, along with
~20 Am Wigeon
~40 L. Scaup
2 Black Ducks.
Further out were
~100 Tundra and
~70 Mute Swans, and
1 pr (m & f) Surf Scoter
~50 Bufflehead (v widely scattered and hard to count)
2 Common Loons

Nice extras were 2 Purple Finches (brown) and a flock of 10 waxwings at
the Visitors' Center and a N. Harrier over the marsh.
