Folks
I did a little birding yesterday and found some nice birds. I started out at Port Tobacco (PT) - the old courthouse property, and then proceeded to Allen's Fresh (AF). Along the way I found five species of raptors (not including vultures), six species of woodpeckers, and eight species of sparrows. The largest surprise was no Bald Eagles were found - not that I looked hard, but it is hard not to find Bald Eagles down here. I also did not search for Red-headed Woodpecker. They can usually be found in a number of locations.
Highlights were:
Ruddy Duck - AF - 14 sleeping birds
one each;
Northern Harrier - AF
Sharp-shinned Hawk - AF
Cooper's Hawk - AF
Red-tailed Hawk - AF
American Kestrel - AF
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - PT
Pileated Woodpecker - PT
Gray Catbird - PT
Northern Mockingbird - PT
Brown Thrasher - PT
Cedar Waxwing - PT - 30+
Hermit Thrush - both locations - one
Eastern Towhee - both locations
Field Sparrow - AF
Savannah Sparrow - AF lots, maybe 50+
Fox Sparrow -PT several
Song Sparrow - both locations
Swamp Sparrow - both locations
White-throated Sparrow - both locations
Dark-eyed Junco - both locations
I also had a lingering Purple Finch early at the house. Most seem to have moved on. Maybe bad weather will bring more or the earlier visitors back.
