Today I went out to get the mail and heard a lot of swans. I looked out
behind the house and saw swans all over the upper (north) end of Jug Bay!
It was very impressive; I counted 157, and I think all were tundras, with
only about ten that were not in adult plumage. I estimate they would be
cumulatively at least 1.5 tons in weight! There have been 3 mute swans (2
adults and a juvenile) at Jug Bay on and off for over a month now (a
surprisingly and thankfully rare species here), but I did not see them
today. Lots of other waterfowl present also, but I was in a hurry and did
not look at anything except the whistlers. The amount of large white
birds on the overcast water made quite a contrast for an otherwise dreary
day.
