The Red-throated Loon at Black Hill Regional Park was there late this morning and into the early afternoon. Happy Thanksgiving!
It was feeding among a large flock of Bufflehead (about 80 or so) across from the lower parking lot by the Visitor Center near the opposite shore of the lake.
It stayed close to a half-dozen Canada Geese.
Also mixed in were 4 Ring-necked Ducks.
It was only seen twice in the first hour, diving under, feeding (the very stiff wind made viewing difficult). After a kayaker passed by, scattering all the birds, it came back and stayed mostly on the surface for the next hour or so, intermitantly diving.
Also present were:
Pied-billed Grebe (2)
Mallard (3)
American Coot (4, by the boat dock near the Visitor Center)
Ring-billed Gull (6)
Bald Eagle (adult, soaring over the Visitor Center as I left)
Turkey Vulture
Great Blue Heron
In another part of the lake (beyond the dam):
Pied-billed Grebe
American Coot (32)
Ruddy Duck (6)
Not a bad Thanksgiving Day's viewing, given the rain, wind and chill (tho' the sun did come out at the very end).
Have a Happy Bird Holiday,
