Hello All,
This past Sunday's birding around Oak Grove yielded 48 species. It
turned into an extended sparrow count with 111 White-Throats, 85 Song
(likely a high count), 35 Junco, 9 Savannah, 5 Field, 5 Chippers (Horseshoe
Rd - DE and getting late for here), 4 Swamp, 2 Fox. Most of these were seen
in the cutoff woods adjacent tot he railroad off of Kinder Rd. This woods
seems loaded with sparrows. I barely had to start pishing and masses of
birds immediately popped up from the brush. Never even needed the owl tape.
Beyond that I had RB Nut (on the farm - MD), Br. Creeper and WB Nut
(seen from North Oak Grove Rd, but birds in MD), a Brown Thrasher (near RR
crossing - DE), a flock of 28 Cedar Waxwings (stream crossing on Horseshoe
Rd - DE) and one adult Bald Eagle flying in the fog (Kinder Rd - MD and NOG
- DE).
Just after dark on 11/20 there was a Screech Owl calling in my
parent's yard. Both my yard and theirs are bordered by a line of white
pines that are now 20-25 years old. I wonder if that is what is attracting
the owls to the yard.
The late winter finch visit was a Pine Siskin that made a brief
appearance on 11/13.
Good Birding,
