The 7th Annual C&O Canal Midwinter Bird Survey will be Saturday, January
25, 2005. This event is sponsored by the Audubon Society of District of
Columbia. http://dcaudubon.org/

The format will be as in previous years; to tally of species and
numbers
on a mile-by-mile basis using the mileposts along the towpath. The goal
is to cover the entire 184.5 miles of the canal with many teams that
cover two to three miles. Although many past participants will be
returning to cover their same areas, we still need observers.

This is a survey that requires familiarity with the birds found in the
winter along the Potomac River. If you are a beginning birder we will
try to match you with more experienced birders. Since most teams cover
2-3 miles, it requires walking 4 to 6 plus miles. For more information
and a look at the data that has been gathered, see:
http://dcaudubon.org/canal.shtml

If you (or people you know) are interested in participating send an
email to giving the areas you would like to cover.
Since this survey is 184 miles long, if you are flexible, you may
indicate one of the 4 Maryland counties or the District. If you have
specific questions, contact Peter Vankevich or (202)
397-5593.
