In part to see what dropped in on yesterday's weather, in part to do
some scouting for a Patuxent MOS field trip this coming Sunday and in
part to remedy a recent lack of birding, I decided to spend a few hours
this morning, December 2, checking the Potomac River from a couple of
vantage points in Prince George's county. I found neither of my target
species -- Cave Swallow and Red-throated Loon but a Common Loon swam up
to within about 20 feet, looked me in the eye and called before diving
in search of fish, never to be seen again.

Otherwise, the highlights were two LONG-TAILED DUCKS. I hoped they
would stay in the area for either Saturday's Waterfowl survey or
Sunday's Field trip but neither seems likely. I watched them swim
downstream on the rising tide from Fort Washington to Mount Vernon where
they took flight deciding to continue their migration by air. I lost
sight of them as they flew into Charles County.

Prospects for Sunday's field trip look good; although the Potomac was
mostly devoid of waterfowl, there was good variety among the 4000 ducks
in Piscataway Creek and hundred of geese and swans. Apparently the trip
didn't make it in to the Yellowthroat but it is listed on the Prince
George's Audubon page. You can read about it there
(<http://www.pgaudubon.org/fieldtrips.html>) or to experience it in
person show up by 7:30 AM Sunday at the Bowie Park and Ride lot (off
197, just south of Route 50 near Bowie).
