Hi --
Barry and I went down to DC to survey the river (and bridges) in hopes of a
Cave Swallow. Alas, no luck but this should be considered as long as the
birds continue through our area. I don't think there is a record for this
species in DC (need to check the list) but certainly, not a regular migrant!
Lacking Cavers, we did manage to see a good selection of raptors -- all were
perched to boot, in the morning calm (it was getting breezy when we left at
10 am):
Merlin (2, imm)
Cooper's Hawk (1, imm.)
Bald Eagle (1, adult)
Red-shouldered Hawk (1, imm)
Peregrine (1, adult, on RR bridge, plucking and eating a pigeon)
All but the Peregrine were on golf course or the point itself, and we had
scope-filling vies of one of the Merlins and the eagle.
Otherwise pretty quiet, with the usual RB Gulls and mallards, a smattering
of Bufflehead, Pied-bill Grebe, Coot, DC Cormorant and a single immature BC
Night Heron.
