The Eared Grebe was showing at Little Seneca Reservoir, off the 121 bridge,
after 4PM on Friday.
Several hundred gulls of five species came in to bathe, including one each
adult Great Black-backed, Lesser Black-backed, and Laughing. The latter, quite
rare at the lake, undoubtedly followed the ringers up from DC.
At 4:30PM hundreds of geese began arriving. There were three classic
hutchinsii, along with three "not so classico" birds, slightly larger, one with a
darker breast, one with prominent white divide between breast and stocking.
Tending slightly towards parvipes or taverneri, but presumably all hutchinsii. All
six stuck together as a tight clan. Just as it was getting too dark, another
group of three apparent hutchinsii dropped in.
There are many web sites with photos of hutchinsii/taverneri/parvipes and
???geese. The site below has specimens from the breeding grounds of hutchinsii
(Southhampton Island). They show quite a range of variation.
