Maybe Santa should bring a new feeder?

Subject:	[MDOSPREY] feed the hummer?

I just heard from Jim Felley that he will be away from the mall until Jan.
3rd. Like many folks I am going out of town tonight. I could fill the feeder on
Monday the 27th, but not before then. I would ask any people going down to
see the Ripley Garden hummer to bring a bottle of sugar water with them (1 part
sugar to 3 or 4 parts water, but not honey), and fill the feeder if it is
down. (You can't add a little bit, when you take the feeder apart most of what is
in there is lost.) The feeder holds a pint or more, but it leaks, and I am
not sure how long it will last. If you wait until just after the bird has
visited, you can get it filled before the next round, and it won't be perturbed.

Perhaps birders living downtown could check on it. At least anyone visiting
should post about the solution level. If the feeder runs dry the hummer will
probably try to move on quickly, but if it is very cold, like the last few days,
its chances might not be good. As long as the heat lamp is on and the feeder
is a few inches away, the bird is fine. I might come up with a new feeder by
next week.

Thanks
