Hi Everyone,

Happy New Year.

Started the day looking for the Loggerhead Shrike in Washington County with no luck, glad it has been re-found. Jim Brighton and I stopped at the Burkittsville pond in Frederick County, where Jim found a Cackling Goose among the several hundred Canada's. On Lily Ponds road, we saw a small flock of pipits. At the 121 bridge overlooking Black Hills, we found two Eared grebes. We also saw seven swans, with one having a very large neck. Six Tundra Swans flew and left the one swan. We moved closer on the trail described in the earlier post and were joined by Jim Stasz who helped confirm the identity of the Trumpeter Swan.

All three of us tried for the Sandhill Crane but were unable to locate the bird in Poolesville or at its original location. Jim S. and Jim B. did find a Lapland Longspur at the Polo fields on Hughes road among a flock of Horned Larks. Back at the parking area on 121, a flock of Canada's flew overhead and contained two Cackling Geese.

Great day to be out.
