I led a field trip to the Natl. Arboretum today (Sat., 1/8), with the
following to report (some common species reported for the sake of the comp
list if it's done this year):
38 species, but unfortunately I found some of these before or after the 3
participants were around.
1 Sharp-shinned Hawk
1 Cooper's Hawk
2 Red-shouldered Hawks
1 Red-Tailed Hawk
1 Belted Kingfisher
3 Red-bellied Woodpeckers
1 Hairy Woodpecker
2 No. Flickers
2 Pileated Woodpeckers
6 Carolina Wrens
2 Winter Wrens
2 Golden-crowned Kinglets
2 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
2 Eastern Bluebirds
5 Hermit Thrushes
4 Am. Robins
1 Gray Catbird
1 Orange-crowned Warbler (presumably the returning individual at the Asian
Garden)
1 Eastern Towhee
12 Song Sparrows
20 White-throated Sparrows
4 Dark-eyed Juncos
Also seen during the day in other parts of DC were 1 Merlin and 3
Double-crested Cormorants at the Anacostia River Park. And Friday morning I
had an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull practically at my feet at the tip of
Hains Point.
Good birding,
