Sat, Jan 15: I spent the morning tooling around DC, with the following to
report (again, some are common, but included for the sake of the DC Comp
list):
Pied-billed Grebe - 3 in Washington Channel
Black Vulture - 1 flyover at Kenilworth Park
Snow Goose - 1 in Washington Channel (nr. the tip of Ft. McNair) with many
Canada Geese
Canada Goose - well over a thousand Canadas are in DC right now in various
places, and I couldn't find a single Cackling among them. There are still
no confirmed records of Cackling Goose in DC
Common Merganser - c.10 females in the Tidal Basin
Bald Eagle - 1 adult over the mouth of the Anacostia
Merlin - 1 at Kenilworth Park giving the crows a run for their money. It
was relentless in its harassment.
Killdeer - 3 at Anacostia River Park
Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 ad. at the tip of Hains (with Ring-billeds),
another on a piling opposite Anacostia River Park
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 1 ad along the entrance road to Kenilworth Park
Brown Creeper - 1 along entrance road to Kenilworth Park
Brown-headed Cowbird - 1 at Anacostia River Park
Purple Finch - 1 flyover at Kenilworth Park
Note - there are signs that Hains Point will be closed to all pedestrian and
vehicle traffic from 15-20 Jan, presumably in preparation for the
inauguration. Since it was open this morning, I'm assuming that the closing
time will begin when they shut the gates this evening.

Good birding,
