Yes, on a number of occasions. Also, British birders are constantly looking
for other North American "variants" such as American Herring Gull (which the
BOU has split from Herring Gull), White-winged as opposed to their Velvet
Scoter, North American race Northern Harriers and Rough-Legged Hawks, North
American Black Terns etc. Some of the British Birding magazines, most
especially "Birding World," have published excellent articles over the years
on identifying these forms and we Yanks can use them to do the "reverse"
separation.
