Friday(1/21), I found one Ross's Goose and one Richardson's Goose in a Sonw
Goose flock along Route 309 in Queen Anne's County. I looked around Talbot
County for the geese reported there last week, no luck.
Saturday(1/22), Jim Brighton and I headed to Ocean City highlights included
2 King Eider(1st year male, female), 4 Common Eider(first year males), 1
Harlequin Duck(female), and a 1st year Glaucous Gull. No luck with alcids.
Open water was tough to find all weekend so finding Wood Ducks on Barren
Creek in Wicomico county was nice. At the landfill near Salsbury we had
both first year Iceland and Glaucous Gulls.
Sunday(1/23), Jim and I went out looking for longspurs and buntings. Best
bird of the day was a Lapland Longspur in Talbot County, near the
intersection of Rt. 309 and Rt. 404. Common Mergansers were on the Chester
River at Chestertown, Kent County. As well as on the Choptank River at
Choptank, Caroline County. Also in Choptank was a White-breasted Nuthatch.
Over all the weather was beautiful, glad to have not watched this storm from
inside. Ended up seeing 31 species of waterfowl this weekend. I have never
seen so many scoters around the inlet in ocean city other than fly-bys, alas
no Common or Velvet Scoters to be had.
