While walking my dog this afternoon here in Arbutus, I saw a Downy Woodpecker actively excavating a hole. I only noticed one bird, and could not discern if it was a male or female. The bird was making its call note constantly while doing its work, every 2 seconds or so it would stick its head out of the hole and shake, sending a puff of wood chips everywhere.
Early this evening about 5:30pm, I was out walking my dog...again...and the "same" bird was still at it, again because of the fading light, and at the urging of my four-legged companion, I was unable to see if it was a male or female bird.
