Maryland Birds & Birding

Today I made my first bird survey at Masonville Cove in Baltimore. It is the site of the first Bald Eagle nest in the city. It is on the south side of the harbor along Frankfurst Avenue in Brooklyn. It is bordered on the west by the Arundel Corp., on the east by the Fairfield Auto Terminal, and on the south by the Harbor Tunnel Thruway. This is state property administered by the Maryland Port Authority. Arrangements for entry are made through MPA so that they can notify police of birders' presence.
Today the cove was frozen but there was open water at the entrance to the cove. Waterfowl were here and gulls were resting on the edge of the ice. Trails are mostly overgrown, muddy, and treacherous. Lots of broken glass and other detritus.
