Was walking north up 13th Street near Penna. Avenue about 30 minutes ago,
when a bird flew across the street ahead of me and caught my eye. It was
chunky, with a very long bill. Although I've only seen the pictures, I
immediately thought Woodcock. I crossed the street in the middle of traffic
and it took off again, back south - landing in front of the door to a bank
on the corner of 13th and E NW.
It allowed me to approach quite closely, a foot or so - and was indeed an
American Woodcock. It sat still on the ground, with its tail up stiffly. I
assume the poor thing is injured or sick. I left it there - I have no
experience in bird handling and have been taught, when in doubt, to leave
wild things alone.
Lord knows what a Woodcock is doing in the cement-and-glass canyons a few
blocks from the White House.
Odd/sad way to get a life bird.
