MD Osprey:

A quick review of local (adjacent state) Northern Lapwing records:

DE (fide Bruce Peterjohn):
"Briefly, there are 3 records of Northern Lapwing from DE, all at Bombay
Hook NWR. The dates are 14 March 1953, Dec. 26, 1999, and July 4 1996. All
of these records are documented. To my knowledge, I am unaware of any other
unverified reports from the state."

PA (fide Nick Pulcinella):
"We have a BIG ZERO here in PA until your guy decides to cross that border."

VA (fide Sue Heath):
"Send that lapwing down here! We have only one report of Northern Lapwing
in the state and it is from December 24, 2004." [This has not yet been
accepted by the records committee. PCD]

  NJ (fide Laurie Larson):
"We just have two:
1 20-30 mi N of Fortescue 8 Mar 53
2 Goshen 1-4 Jan 97"

NY (fide Angus Wilson):
"Only one Lapwing has occurred since NYSARCs inception in the mid-70's."

         Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus (N)
1995-5-A/B/C/D, Mecox, Southampton, Long Island, Suffolk Co.,
1/28/95-3/18/95, (Ph), KB48(4)

"Regrettably, we have not had the luxury of compiling pre-NYSARC records
... there have been additional records (most or all were solid I believe)
... The 1995 record was I believe the 4th for Long Island but I can't
remember if the species has been adequately documented upstate.

General:
As I reported earlier, here are the ABA Checklist (2002) comments on NA
records:

"Casual in e. Canada and ne. United States, with flights in December 1927
and January 1966 accounting for most
records. About 30 isolated records (Bagg 1967), mostly from late fall to
early winter, include about 14 singles since 1988; one near
West Union, Adams Co., OH, 19–20 December 1994 (AFN 49:153) is the
westernmost. There are a handful of records for the se.
United States and an additional four records from the West Indies."

And, again, here are the AOU Checklist (1998) comments:

"Casual to northeastern North America from Baffin Island, Labrador, and
Newfoundland south through southern Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward
Island, Nova Scotia, and New England to New York. Accidental in Ohio, North
Carolina, South Carolina, Bermuda, the Bahamas (Hog Island), Puerto Rico,
and Barbados."

Hope this helps!

Phil
