Hello everyone. I just got back from another stop into the town park and was
very disappointed at first. The Ice was all gone and there was about 400 gulls
either sitting on the grass or bouncing around in the harbor. All Ring-billed Gulls.
This was around 4:25. There was a flock of about 1000 gulls about 2 miles out.
I figured that was the flock I wanted to see so I just gave up. I packed it up and
started to head out when I saw a steady stream of gulls heading down from the
landfill in my direction. So I stopped, got out and started scanning the flow of gulls
which was about 5 to 6 birds wide and endlessly long. The second bird I set my
eyes on was a first year Iceland. So I continued to scan, 5 minutes later the
Glaucous Gull flew right over. Than about 2000 birds later, I had another Iceland.
Then there was 6 birds all chasing each other around in a different direction, one
of them had something the other birds wanted. Looked like a bagel.Anyway the
one gull I was thinking was another White-winged Gull in the chase, became the
first year Thayer's. So it seems that they have been getting later as the sun sets
later. This is the same thing that happened the other day at the park when I was
getting ready to leave. A steady stream was coming in and landing which may be
why Hans only had one Iceland, and I had 3. Most of them landed between the bad
lighted green marker and inside the town park. One Iceland landed on the grass
next too the pavilion. Oddly enough I had no Lesser Black-backed Gulls. They may
have been there but I wasn't really looking for them.
Also present were about 2000 plus Common Mergansers. They were everywhere!
