Curious to know what diving ducks might be on the Potomac at the AT / South
Mtn / C&O intersection (north of Brunswick) this time of year - I saw no
dabblers. I'm mostly in upland / forest interior and smaller riparian
areas so I'm vague with ducks.
Fri 2/18 - saw only 3 passings of 2 ducks each on opposite shore, landing
then feeding in the eddies behind rocks. In flight, very white with black
heads - based only on Sibley's diving ducks and habitat, I'm guessing
Com.Goldeneyes or Com. Mergansers - all too far to get a strong look at,
but close enough to see lots of white. A smaller, possibly a Ruddy? was
somewhat closer, solitary, but still not a great look. More browning /
drab.
Any thoughts from the more experienced? Doesn't seem like it could be many
types this time of year.
Other than that, only a single Pileated and Downy, 4 Cana.Geese, 2
Caro.Wrens by the river and several Cardinals flittering in the scrub
growth by the tracks. Way too cold and windy on the river for all of us.
Golden-crowned kinglets were the only bird moving and 'seesping' on the
ridgeline of South Mtn, just north of the Potomac off the AT in the
evening, but white-throated sparrows, juncos, caro.wrens were in the
boulderfields below.
