My mother recently lost a grand old Live Oak in her yard in Florida from  
some unknown disease, and I suspect it is the same one you mention. An otherwise  
perfectly healthy and very old and large tree suddenly succumbs, but just 
that  one in a yard full of live oaks. It was very distressing for her...
