Lots of interesting birds came to our several feeding stations
yesterday and today due to the 6+ inches of wet snow that fell over here.
Highlight of the period was a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD that appeared
briefly today within an ever-changing mixed flock of Cowbirds, Grackles and
Red-wings. My wife, Carolyn, spotted this bird shortly after noon, but it
did not stay around long enough for her to call me, and it was not amongst
the several flocks that visited later in the day. The bird was a
first-winter male.
Observations of Thursday: PINE SISKIN (1), Goldfinch (20+), Brown
Thrasher, Fox Sparrow, Eastern Towhee (4), Blue Jay (16), Cardinal (12),
Junco (60+), White-throated Sparrow (40+), Song Sparrow (4), Brown-headed
Cowbird (40+), Red-winged Blackbird (400+), Common Grackle (200+), Downy
Woodpecker, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Carolina Chickadee and Tufted Titmouse.
Today most of the above birds were still present, though I did not
see the Siskin. Out on the waters of Leeds Creek there were Canvasbacks
(18), Lesser Scaup (80+), Ruddy Duck (just 1), and this evening around 1000
Canada Geese came in after being out in the fields all day.
