I was out there this evening, from about 5:30-6:15 p.m., around dusk, just
as the sun was setting, and it was absolutely amazing to see short eared
owls for the first time. We were near the intersection of Pumping Station
and Bigham, saw at least a dozen owls (up to 4 at a time) flying across the
fields on either side of Pumping Station Road. As we were getting ready to
leave (back in the car), several flew almost right above us! This area is
just a few miles away from Gettysburg National Battlefield. If you have the
chance to get there around dusk, it's well worth heading north!! (I happen
to live up near Gettysburg, PA and work in Westminster, MD!) The friend that
went with me tonight hopes to take her son out there tomorrow night,
hopefully the birds will be around then, too!
