Since my laboratory opened late this morning for lack of heat I decided to
make a try for the Eurasian wigeon at Cambridge. I started at Long Wharf
at about 8:30 and scoped back upriver along the town shoreline. 7 American
wigeon, lots of cans and scaup, but no Eurasian wigeon and bad light. I
decided to try for better looks closer in town. I happened to choose
Belevedere Street because there was a lower concrete wall at the street's
end. After 15 minutes of futile scanning the birds on the water I noticed
a bunch of mallards sleeping and sunning on the bulkhead of the property to
my left rear. There he was - about 50 feet away. He was resting but soon
stood up and began feeding on what appeared to be grass seed (the edge of
the yard looks to have been seeded and strawed). He wandered about with
the other wigeons and mallards and jumped into the water. After a 10
minute swim he returned to the bulkhead. This all was between about 9:00
and 9:30. Other birds seen: common goldeneye, bufflehead, red-breasted
merganser, surf scoter, (a large scoter flock was put in flight by a
workboat - no white-wingeds), greater scaup, lesser scaup, canvasback,
mallard, Canada goose, American crow, ring-billed gull.

Good birding -
