Several Woodcock have been calling and displaying on the grounds of
Pickering Creek Audubon Center for the past 10 days or so - when weather is
nice enough (in their opinion). They are easy to find, and Pickering Creek
is safe from anyone getting arrested (Shireen, we are looking out for you).
If you choose to visit Talbot County some evening around 6:15 until
dark, drive down the entrance road of Pickering Creek (called Audubon Lane),
and at the end of the lane turn left into the parking area. The Woodcock
can be heard from the parking lot. If you want to get closer, and possible
even get a sighting of the courtship flight, just listen for the calling,
and then walk out into the field so as to get near where the calling is
coming from. Some nights they have favored positions close to the trail
between the parking lot and the wetland ponds to the south of the lot.
Other times they have been heard almost due west of the old barn that is
just south of the parking lot.
Right now, the geese are so noisy that one must listen carefully for
the Woodcock. If you don't hear the Woodcock, just enjoy the chorus frogs
and the chorus of the Great Horned Owls, for they seem to be vocalizing a
lot these days.
Last Saturday evening a couple of low-flying flocks of Tundra Swan
flew over around that time, but there is no guarantee of those being present
whenever you visit.

Subject: [MDOSPREY] Baltimore-area woodcock?
Well, I am absolutely crushed about the Lapwing situation; as a
shorebird nut, this was one bird I was willing to make a special trip
for this weekend.... :-(
To comfort me, can anyone suggest Baltimore County or nearby locations
for watching woodcock displays? Preferably an area where I won't get
arrested. Please mend my broken heart ....
thanks,
shireen
